Tools

Sensory products and how to use them

Products work best as part of a plan. Ask us before buying so the tool matches your child's needs.

Proprioceptive

Weighted lap pad or blanket

Use for 15–20 minutes during seated work or winding down. Choose about 10% of body weight and never use it when a child can't remove it themselves.
Oral / proprioceptive

Chewy tubes & necklaces

Offer when a child chews clothing or pencils. Check regularly for wear and supervise young children.
Tactile

Fidgets & theraputty

Quiet hand-held tools for focus. Teach them as tools, not toys, and keep them below desk level.
Vestibular / proprioceptive

Wiggle cushion

Gives gentle movement while seated. Start with short periods.
Auditory

Ear defenders

Reduce overwhelming noise at assemblies or shopping. Use for set times so they don't replace gradual exposure.
Vestibular

Therapy swing

Slow linear swinging calms; fast spinning alerts. Always follow your therapist's guidance.
Proprioceptive / tactile

Compression clothing

Snug layers can feel organising. Check comfort and skin.
Visual

Visual timers & lamps

Make time and transitions predictable and soften harsh light.
